How to Locate Big Cats Breeders

Although cats such as tigers, ocelots and bobcats are wild animals, these big cats are also popular pet options in some areas of the world. Finding a big cat breeder takes a considerable amount of time and research, so make sure you know your community's legal restrictions on exotic pets prior to starting your search.

  • Search on the Internet. Type "big cat breeders" along with the name of your state or city into a search engine. Look through the results to discover breeders specializing in large feline species in or near your community.

  • Find a veterinarian offering exotic animal care. Exotic animal doctors usually provide services to large pet cats, and they may be able to recommend a big cat breeder.

  • Contact your local animal shelter. Animal shelters often have close relationships with breeders. If there is a large cat breeder in your town, the animal shelter should be able to provide you with their contact information.

  • Locate animal rescue organizations. Some animal rescue organizations focus on one breed or type of cat, and a number of these volunteer groups only rescue large cats. They will know of local and national big cat breeders with solid reputations.

  • Check the breeder's credentials. Once you locate a big cat breeder, check their credentials by visiting the Better Business Bureau's online site. In addition, ensure the breeder is registered with an accredited breeder's association, such as the Cat Fanciers' Association or The International Cat Association. Ask for references from other big cat owners who have worked with the breeder as well.
