How to Lubricate Door Hardware
It is not uncommon for the hardware on a door to start squeaking after a certain period of time, especially if it is an older door. The squeaking does not mean that it is necessary to replace the door because it can easily be repaired by lubricating the hardware on the door, which is a lot cheaper than replacing it.
How to Lubricate Door Hardware
- Open the door half way and slide an old towel underneath the door where it attaches to the wall. This should be done to catch any oil that spills onto the floor.
- Apply approximately three drops of multi-purpose lubricating oil between the top lip on the hinge pin and the plate of the hinge. Most doors will have three hinges and this should be done to each of them.
- Open and shut the door several times to distribute the oil into the hinge. After opening and shutting the door several times the squeaking noise should be gone. If you still hear the noise add another couple of drops of oil to the hinges and open and shut again.
- Take the towel from beneath the door and hold it in your hand up to the bottom of the doorknob.
- Apply a couple of drops of oil where the knob goes into the door.
- Rotate the knob several times to distribute the oil into the knob.
