How to Make Egyptian Water Clocks

How to Make Ancient Water Clocks

Centuries ago, men have created several methods on how to measure and take time. People would figure out what time it was during the day by using the sun. As time went on, inventors created methods on how to measure time more precisely. Ancient water clocks were one of the first devices on how to measure time. You can make ancient water clocks as a cool project at home.

  1. Grab five plastic cups. Ensure that the plastic cups are clear and are the same size. Grab a pushpin and poke a hole into the middle of the bottom of every clear plastic cup.

  2. Grab a foam board. Ensure that the foam board is 20-by-30 inches. Position the foam board. Ensure that the 20-inch side of the board is at the top and at the bottom. Grab some glue and then glue the sides of the five cups down the middle of the board. Glue the cups evenly in a vertical row. Place the plastic cups one by one, beneath the other, with the top of the cups pointing towards the top of your foam board.

  3. Pin your foam board to your wall. Ensure that the board is at eye level and the top of each cup is facing up. Grab a pushpin and secure each corner of the foam board. Grab a table and then place it against a wall underneath your foam board. Grab a glass jar and then place it beneath the cups on the table.

  4. Pour some water into the plastic cup on top of the foam board. Grab a pushpin and make large holes in the plastic cups, so the water can flow easier in the cups. Empty the glass jar when all of the water has come through the cups.

  5. Pour water into the top plastic cup. Grab a timer and then start it. When one minute has elapsed, grab something to write with, such as a marker to mark the glass jar. This indicates the water level. Continue this process until all of the water has gone through the five cups.
