How to Make Fiberglass Molds From Boat Parts

Mold parts are an extremely important part of building any replica or mass-produced article.  Molds are commonly used to build cars, car bodies, various airplane parts and even boats.  Fiberglass is often used to make mold parts, and with the proper knowledge and right materials you can make fiberglass mold parts also.

  1. Prepare yourself to work. Wear a lab coat to shield you from potential hazardous material. Put on safety glasses to shield the eyes from debris and put on nitrile gloves for additive support with the hands.

  2. Construct a square pallet of poreless peel-ply ample enough for the work space desired. Poreless peel-ply is a thin non-stick plastic that will help to keep all of the other materials used from making a mess.

  3. Apply a medium-thick coating of mold release to the desired boat part for the mold. The thickness of the layer will help to prevent the fiberglass and epoxy from sticking to the boat itself. Mold release can be used via a spray can or though a paint mixture.

  4. Shape the part. Use a rotary cutter and cut the fiberglass in the shape of the desired replica part.

  5. Mix the epoxy via manufacturer's direction in a polyethylene cup. Use a wooden spoon to thoroughly stir the mixture.

  6. Layer fiberglass on the boat part you wish to be molded with and coat the layers facing upward in epoxy. Using an epoxy spreader, evenly spread the epoxy. Repeat this step until you achieve the desired fiberglass thickness. Let the epoxy stand and dry via manufacturer's instruction.

  7. Remove the dried fiberglass mold from the boat part. A proper mold will have the same shape and texture as the boat part that was molded.
