How to Make Half Model Boats

Making half model boats is a tradition that dates back centuries. Boat designers in the past used to build half model boats to get a better idea of how a boat would look and function. There are people who still like to build half model boats. Fortunately, building half model boats is not that difficult to do.

Supplies needed:

  • Half model boat kit

  • Glue

  • Sandpaper

  • Safety glasses

  • Paint (optional)

  • Varnish (optional)

  • Carving knife

  1. Purchase a half model boat kit.
There are many model retailers who offer half model boat kits. You
can easily find these kits online. Bluejacketinc.com has half model
    boats kits available.

  2. Lay your half model boat kit on a
flat surface. Organize the pieces to the kit. Put the instructions
    to the side.

  3. Put your safety glasses on. Use
the instructions to learn which pieces of the half model boat kit
have to be carved out. Not all pieces will have to be carved out
before assembly. After you have carved out the pieces, use the
sandpaper to smooth out the rough edges. Check the pieces that you
did not have to carve out for rough edges. If the pieces have rough
edges, use the sandpaper to smooth them as well.

  4. Start gluing the pieces together.
The half model boat kit instructions will show you which pieces have
to be glued together first. Follow the order that the instructions
gives. Do not skip any of the steps. Some pieces will have to dry
for 24 hours before you continue assembling the half model boat. It
may take several days to finish assembling the model.

  5. Use the varnish or paint on the
completed model. You can paint the model any color that you wish.
