How to Make Hunting Bows
Are you interested in hunting, but don't want to spend a great deal of money on equipment to do so? Hunters have been making their own bows for centuries now and you can too. This project won't take a great deal of time to complete and you can be out getting dinner for the family in no time at all. Become self-sufficient again by making a hunting bow right at home.
Hunting bows are very simple to make as seen by the cavemen. This is a wonderful tool that has come in handy for centuries and plays a major role in the development of human life. Here you can make a bow just as your ancestors did and you most likely already have many of the needed supplies.
There are two main components to a hunting bow: the bowstring and the stave. The flexibility of the stave is what determines the power of the bow. For this reason, the wood you choose to make your bow must be flexible. Elm, cedar and hickory saplings are all appropriate choices. Try to find a sapling that is straight, one or two inches in diameter and five to six feet long.
- Take the sapling and cut notches in each end. These notches should be located one inch from the tip of this sapling.
- Fasten your bowstring so the string should fall approximately an inch shorter than the stave itself. A shoelace may be used for the bowstring or you can find something appropriate at a hunting or sporting goods store.
- Fasten this string in the notches and then test it for tension and stability by giving it a few pulls.
Once your bow is complete, you will need to make or purchase some arrows to use. Hunting accessories such as a quiver will also be helpful. Start small and build over time as you develop skill with your bow.
Modern bows are much more complicated, but you don't need to purchase one unless you want to. Your homemade bow will do the job nicely. Just be sure to use caution and don't aim for a moose or bear until you are comfortable using the weapon. This will help to prevent injuries.
