How to Make Personalized Napkins

Personalized napkins are the perfect way to add a touch of personality to any event such as a wedding or graduation. These special forms of art will add style to any theme and is a creative way to decorate inexpensively. The best method for personalizing your own napkins is with embroidery. The task at hand is quite extensive but the finished product will be well worth the time.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Cloth napkins

  • Washable, iron-on embroidery graphing

  • Iron

  • Ruler

  • Disappearing ink pen

  • Tear-away backing

  • Small embroidery hoop

  • Letter pattern book

  • Graph paper

  • Embroidery thread

  • Embroidery needles

  • Starch

  1. Determine where you will want to add the design on the piece of cloth and mark it with a disappearing ink pen.

  2. Measure the height and length of the area and divide each by two. The result will give you the point where the averages intersect. Mark this spot with the disappearing ink pen as this is the center of the napkin.

  3. Iron on the embroidery graphing to the napkins front. Do not worry about seeing lines as these will wash away with soap and water.

  4. Place the napkin and the tear-away backing onto the embroidery hoop. Snugly fasten it in place by keeping the fabric taut.

  5. Select the lettering you will want to have on the napkin. Draw the letters onto the graph paper using the disappearing ink pen. Feel free to add special designs.

  6. Go to your local craft or sewing supply store and choose a thread color that must matches the colors of your lettering.

  7. Fold the paper in half both length-wise and width-wise as this will tell you the center of the design. Start working from that point.

  8. Wash the napkin and allow adequate time for it to air try, approximately three to five hours.

  9. Spray the backside of the napkin once it is dry with starch and iron the napkin to perfect its presentation.
