How to Make Rustic Looking House Accessories

You can use things you already have or find natural items to make rustic looking house accessories and decorations such as dried herb and flower bundles or natural curtain rods. Wood furniture can be given a new rustic look with a distressed finish. These things are simple and achieve a natural, rustic look.

Herb and Dried Flower Bundles

Items Needed:

  • Herb clippings

  • Flower clippings

  • Hot glue gun

  • Ribbon or twine

  1. Dry the clippings. If you are using fresh herb and flower clippings, they will need to be dried. To dry them, simply hang them upside down in a dry area. Herbs and flower can also be bought already dried.

  2. Assemble the bundles. Divide the herbs and flowers into proportionate bundles into the desired size. Add a dab of glue into the bundle where the ribbon will be attached so it will not be seen. This will ensure they stay together and loose pieces do not fall out.

  3. Tie the ribbon or twine around the bundle and attach with the hot glue gun so it does not slip out of place.

  4. Hang these bundles upside down as decorative pieces in the kitchen.

Tip: You can also arrange dry flowers and herbs in vases throughout the house.

Natural Curtain Rods

Items Needed:

  • Large sticks or driftwood

  • Metal curtain rod holders

  1. Find appropriate-length sticks or driftwood that is mostly straight. Trim them if they are too long for your windows

  2. Clean them to remove any dirt or bugs

  3. Allow to dry in a dry area.

  4. Attach the metal curtain rod holders above the windowsills an inch or two wider than the window.

  5. Use the natural rods to hang your curtains.

  • hammer and wire brush

  2. Distress the furniture in some areas with a hammer and wire brush.

  3. Sand the entire piece.

  4. Primer the piece with a dark color that complements your decorating taste.

  5. Glaze the piece with a light finish in another complementary color.
