How to Make Your Own Distilled Water

Regular tap water used for drinking has many impurities and minerals in it. In addition, water treatment plants many times will use additives such as chlorine to improve the clarity and taste of the water. For these reasons, many people have begun to distill their own drinking water in an effort to purify it. The process of distilling is easy to perform at home.

Items Needed:

  • 3 to 5 gallon stainless steel pot

  • Stainless steel lid

  • Water from the tap

  • Glass bowl container

  • Ice

  1. Fill pot half full with tap water.

  2. Place glass container in the water. It is important to keep the container afloat and not to allow it to touch the bottom of the stainless pot. The glass bowl will get hot during the process, but you do not want the water that collects in this bowl to boil. If the pot cannot be filled enough to allow the glass bowl to float, place a small baking rack on the bottom of the pot for the glass bowl to rest on.

  3. Invert the lid for the pot.

  4. Place ice in the inverted lid.

  5. Place inverted lid with ice in it on top of the pot. This is the method used to start the condensation. As the hot steam from the boiling water hits the cold lid on top of the pot, condensation will form.

  6. Turn on stove and heat up water. Heat the water to boiling; make sure that the boiling water does not boil up over the top of the glass container. As the water continues to boil, condensation begins to form on the convex of the pot lid. The condensation will begin to pool towards the point of the convex and start to drip into the glass container.

  7. Remove pot from the heat.

  8. Remove the lid from the pot carefully. You may have to remove the ice water from the top of the lid first.

  9. Let water cool and remove glass container. This is your distilled water. Once the water has cooled enough, it can be bottled and refrigerated.
