How to Make Your Own Pond Filtration System

Pond filtration systems remove organic waste and other types of debris from pond water. They are commercially available, but you can make your own. A homemade pond filtration system typically uses less expensive material, saving you a significant amount of money.

Things You'll Need:

  • Large plastic tub with lid

  • Knife

  • PVC pipe

  • Hacksaw

  • Silicone sealant

  • Small rocks

  • Plastic wiffle balls

  • Quilt batting

  • Window screen

  1. Use a sharp knife to cut a rectangular hole in the plastic tub that is the size of your screen. Cut a hole in the side of the tub near the bottom that is the size of your PVC pipe.

  2. Cut a 4-inch length of PVC pipe with a hacksaw. Place the pipe into the hole at the bottom of the tub, and fill the gap around the pipe with sealant.

  3. Cut additional pieces as needed to connect the plastic tub to the pump. This often requires you to use multiple PVC pipes with elbow joints. Cover the joints with sealant.

  4. Place a layer of small rocks in the plastic tub to serve as a substrate for the bacteria that will grow in the tub. Ensure that the rocks are larger than the PVC pipe. Add a layer of plastic wiffle balls to the plastic tub to provide additional surface area for bacteria colonies. Cover the plastic tub with quilt batting.

  5. Cover the hole in the lid of the plastic tub with a square of window screen material to filter out large particles. Fasten the lid onto the tub.
