How to Make a Homemade Barbecue Pit
Some of the best food you can eat comes off a homemade barbecue pit. That’s not to mention having made the food yourself. A nice barbecue pit will also be the envy of your neighbors and they truly is not that hard to make. One good afternoon’s work and you will be the owner of a great new barbecue pit.
Items you will have to have:
- Trowel
- Shovel
- Wire or metal rack
- Lawn spray paint
- Level
- Stone dust
- Mortar mix
- Bricks
- Measure off the area where you will be placing the barbeque pit. Take the measurements to your local home improvement center and they should be able to tell you how many bricks and how much mortar mix and stone dust you will require.
- Use the lawn paint and mark off the area where the pit is going as per your dimensions from earlier.
- Dig down about one foot on all four sides. When the hole is done, make certain the ground is level with the level. Keep the walls straight as well.
- Put the stone dust in the bottom of the pit and smooth it out with your trowel. Use the level again to make sure it is still level.
- Mix your mortar following the directions on the bag. Pour about 1 inch in the bottom of the pit and smooth it out with the trowel. Start putting your bricks in the bottom of the pit and press firmly into the mortar.
- Stack the bricks one upon the other trying to use a staggered design for strength. Scrape excess mortar from the bricks and put it back in the mix. Do this until you are high enough to prevent wind from interfering with the fire within the pit. (This should be no less than two feet and can be as high as you want.)
- Let the mortar dry for a minimum of 24 hours. (48 hours would be better) Place the rack on the pit and get ready for some fantastic barbeque.
