- Make sure the area near the barbecue pit is free of debris, leaves, twigs and any other combustible items before attempting to light the fire. These could cause your fire to get out of control.
- Gather the supplies you need to start the fire such as small tree branches, large pieces of wood, newspaper, dry twigs pine needles and leaves.
- Place some small pieces of wood in the bottom of the pit. Be sure to place them in the center of the pit. Leave enough space at the bottom of the structure so you can insert some small twigs, leaves and paper.
- Twist some small pieces of newspaper and stuff it in the opening. After inserting the newspaper put in the twigs and leaves.
- Use a long handled fireplace lighter to ignite the newspaper.
- Allow the fire to burn until the wood and leaves catch the fire and start to burn.
- Gradually add some larger pieces of wood to the fire as it burns.
- Use a fireplace poker to stir the fire if it starts to go out.
