How to Cook On a Barbecue Pit
Summer time is the time for back yard barbecues. Make sure that you know how to cook on your barbecue pit to assure that all your friends and family enjoy the food you prepare. Follow a few general and simple steps to make your back yard barbecue a big success.
- Clean your grill by scrubbing it with soap and water in a sink. You don’t want left over residue from the last barbecue to affect the flavor of your meat.
- Make sure that your barbecue doesn’t stick. Grab some non-stick cooking spray and spray the grill down.
- Remove residue left behind from the charcoal and fire on the pit’s floor. This will make it easy to light the pit and your fire will burn more efficiently.
- Lay down newspaper in the bottom of the pit once you have cleaned it entirely.
- Pour a thick layer of charcoal over the newspaper. Make sure to use plenty of charcoal and spread it evenly to make sure the grill cooks evenly and heats up properly.
- Cover your charcoal with lighter fluid.
- Place the grill back inside the pit.
- Use a long lighter to start your fire, and keep your pit open for air circulation until all the charcoal is white-hot.
- Place your food on the grill and make sure to baste your barbecue with sauce and tend to it to keep it from drying up. Have a glass of water handy to put out any flames that will char the outside of the meat too quickly.
- Adjust your pit’s vents to keep your grill at the right temperature and cooking evenly.
- Cook the meat to your liking, turning it over only once to cook on each side.
- Put the meat in a pan and cover the pan with aluminum foil to hold in the juices.
- Serve your barbecue to your hungry guests.
