How to Make a Homemade Chimney Cleaner

When it is cold outside, the chimney is used quite often. This frequent use allows the chimney to become dirty because of the soot and smoke. Regular cleaning after using the chimney can keep it clean and prevent dirt and soot from entering your home when it falls.

How to Make a Homemade Chimney Cleaner

Materials Needed

  • Hot water

  • Bucket

  • Distilled white vinegar

  • Clear ammonia

  • Baking soda

  • Long stick

  • Rubber gloves

  • Scrub brush with a long handle

  1. Pour 1 gallon of hot water in a bucket. Add ½ cup of distilled white vinegar. Mix in 1 cup of clear ammonia and ¼ cup baking soda. Use a long stick to mix the liquids.

  2. Put on rubber gloves to protect your hands during the cleaning process.

  3. Dip a scrub brush with a long handle into the solution. Use the solution and scrub brush to scrub the bricks clean. Use enough solution to soak the bricks.

  4. Apply enough pressure to clean as much dirt and debris from the chimney. Allow the cleaning solution to sit on the chimney for 30 minutes.

  5. Pour the liquid out of the bucket and fill it with clean hot water. Rinse the scrub brush with the long handle.

  6. Dip the scrub brush into the clean water and use it to go over the chimney to remove as much cleaning solution as possible.

  7. Allow the chimney to dry for two days. You want the chimney to be completely dry before using it just in case some of the chemicals were left behind.
