Types of Chimney Caps
A chimney cap is a raised cover for the top of a chimney and is generally made out of aluminum, copper, or steel. These caps help keep wild animals such as birds and raccoons from entering chimneys and also prevent wind and rain from coming in through the chimney. There are several different types of chimney caps, each serving a slightly different purpose.
A standard chimney cap guards against animals, wind, and rain. A screen keeps flying debris and animals from entering the chimney and a cover helps keep rain out. These types of caps are recommended for heavily wooded areas.
Draft inducing chimney caps use wind power to generate stronger updrafts. Spinning turbines use the wind to create lift; however, bi-annual maintenance is required with these caps as creosote can adhere to the turbines.
If your fireplace is older and does not have a damper system, an integral damper system is recommended. These systems keep cold air out, reducing your energy costs and keeping you warm. A chimney cap can be included with the integral damper mechanism along with a cable and lever to open and close the damper.
Electrical draft inducing chimney caps include both a chimney cap and an electrical draft inducer. The draft in the fireplace can be controlled with the electrical fan, thus pulling the smoke up and out of the chimney. These types of caps are oftentimes very expensive and only used for faulty fireplaces.
Single-flue and multi-flue chimney caps are used when the flue sticks up beyond the chimney crown. These caps fit five inches over the flue tip and screw to the outside of the flue. Generally, single-flue and multi-flue chimney caps are made for square or rectangular crowns. Attaching to the chimney crown, top mount chimney caps can be used when the flue sticks up above the crown of the chimney.
Flue stretcher caps elongate the flue to provide more of a draft, protecting against downdrafts. If your fireplace is nearby another chimney, these types of caps can prevent excess smoke from entering.
Chimney pots add style to your home with their ornate appearance. Damper features on the chimney pot help keep warm air in and cold air out. They also offer spark control and animal prevention. Being composed of copper or clay, however, make them more expensive than other chimney caps.
