How to Mount Chimney Caps

Having Chimney caps can be a necessity for any chimney to have. Chimney caps work as a cover for the top of the chimney to shield it from insects or rodents from entering the home through the chimney and flue. If your chimney doesn’t already have chimney caps it is important to install them as the caps will shield the home from harsh weather conditions.

Items needed:

  • Ladder

  • Four screws

  • Chimney glue

  • Tape measure

  • Notepad and pencil

  1. Climb up the ladder unto the roof. Be careful doing this, if necessary you can hire someone to do this job for you since climbing a roof can be a dangerous thing, especially if the roof is steep. Be certain that being on top the roof is something you are confident in doing then you can proceed to the top of your chimney.

  2. Take your tape measure and measure the width of the mouth of the chimney. Write down the measurements if desired to ensure the proper chimney cap will be installed. Climb down the ladder with the measurements.

  3. Purchase the chimney cap that meets the proper measurements that were taken.

  4. Take the new chimney cap up to the roof. Begin to mount the chimney cap at a 90-degree angle on each side to make sure that it fits securely over the chimney flue. The chimney cap can be attached to the chimney by using either screws or chimney cap glue. If screws are uses make sure that the screws are properly tightened.

  5. Repeat this process for each chimney cap. Be sure no materials obstruct the chimeny and the chimney is clear of any dirt and debris.
