How to Make a Wedding Dress

A bride should be the center of attention on her wedding day. There is no better way to get the attention she desires than walking down the aisle in a gorgeous wedding dress. The wedding dress is even more special if the bride designed and made the dress herself.

How to Make a Wedding Dress

  1. Look through bridal magazines to get an idea of what type of dress you want. You can create a unique dress by using the bodice from one dress and the neckline or train from another dress.

  2. Go to a fabric store and choose a pattern that closely resembles your ideal wedding dress. You are only looking for the basic shape of the dress.

  3. Select the fabric that you would like to use for the dress.

  4. Ask someone to help you accurately take your measurements. You should not attempt to do this yourself.

  5. Before attempting to make your wedding dress, use cotton muslin to create a mock dress. Ask for help with the fitting of the muslin. Pay close attention to the fitting of the bust.

  6. Carefully remove the stitches from the muslin, and use this as your new pattern.

  7. Lay the muslin on your fabric and use a rotary wheel and transfer paper to transfer the new pattern onto the fabric.

  8. Use scissors to cut the pattern in the dress fabric.

  9. Follow the pattern instructions and sew the dress together.

  10. Try on the dress to see if there are any alterations that need to be made.

  11. After alterations are done, apply the desired trim to the dress.

  12. Use a steamer to steam out all of the wrinkles in the dress.
