How to Open a Bank Account

Bank accounts for the most part are rather simple to open. However there are some banks and financial institutions that have higher requirements than others and require that you meet these requirements prior to opening an account. To determine whether your selected bank has these requirements you should first consult their website.

  1. Visit the website of your preferred bank or financial institution. If you are unsure of the website URL simply type the name of this bank or financial institution into your preferred search engine and hit ENTER.

  2. Click the "Checking" or "Savings" link found on the bank or financial institution website. Click "Open a checking account" or "Open a savings account."

  3. Follow the on screen instructions to begin the process of setting up your bank account. You begin by filling out an application for this bank account. You provide basic information about yourself such as your name, address, an email address and information pertaining to your employer.

  4. Select the type of bank account you preferred based on the provided information on each checking account offered by your selected bank.

  5. Enter the deposit amount in which you intend to deposit into the account upon its opening into the input box available.

  6. Complete the remaining steps listed on your screen until you reach "Finish."

  7. Visit the local office of this bank or financial institution. Although you are allowed to begin the process of creating this bank account online there are a few steps that require you to visit this office.

  8. Provide the new accounts representative with two forms of identification such as your driver's license and your social security card.

  9. Provide the new accounts representative with the designated deposit account. You are required to give cash deposits when opening an account.

  10. Sign all required paperwork once the new accounts representative prints it out.

  11. Order checks and/or a debit card for this account.
