How to Paint Cheap Furniture
Cheap furniture has the benefit of being inexpensive, but the problem is that it often looks it. Cheap furniture is usually constructed with wood laminates glued over the top of particleboard, which can be a challenge to paint. With a little prep work, even the cheapest furniture can be painted.
Supply List:
- Paint
- Primer
- Sandpaper / sander
- Paintbrushes / rollers
- Determine whether your furniture can be taken apart. If you can take it apart, it will be much easier to paint it.
- Sand your furniture. If it is painted wood, you need to remove the layer of paint on top. If it is laminate, you should sand the surface until the laminate loses its gloss. You can use a palm sander or hand sand it with various grits of sandpaper. Start with a rough grit of sandpaper and complete your sanding with a finer grit.
- Wipe down the furniture using a moist cloth to remove any sanding dust that could possibly ruin your paint job.
- Use a brush or roller to coat your furniture with primer. If you didn’t sand your furniture enough, you will notice it in this step. Furniture that is not sanded enough will not absorb the primer and will faintly show the original color of the furniture piece underneath it.
- Allow the primer to dry completely.
- Paint the furniture piece your desired color.
- Allow the furniture to dry overnight.
- Piece the furniture back together if you took it apart.
- Touch up any spots you missed with a paintbrush and allow it to dry again before using the furniture.
