Facts About Attending Veterinary Colleges

How to Pick the Best Veterinary Colleges

When choosing a veterinary college to attend, there are plenty of variables to consider. The best way to make a decision is to do research and actually visit the schools that you are interested in. Location is another factor to take into consideration. In the end, you need to pick the best college for you based on what you are looking for.

  • Determine the veterinary specialty you want to go into. Most people are unaware that veterinarians have specialties just like physicians do. Some examples of specialties include orthopedics, surgery and internal medicine. In addition to choosing a specialty, you need to decide if you want to work with a specific type of animal. You can choose to work with exotic animals, common house pets, or livestock.

  • Look into schools that offer specialties that you are interested in. Once you have determined your specialty, research the schools that reflect your interests. For instance, Cornell University in Ithaca, New York has a four-year curriculum that focuses on laboratory instruction and surgical techniques. This would be an ideal choice if you plan to become a veterinary surgeon.

  • Request information from the colleges that you are interested in. Send an inquiry by letter or email asking for information such as tuition costs, job placement opportunities and student financial aid.

  • Use your GPA to your advantage. Top schools like to recruit top students so if you boast a 3.5 or higher, you may have colleges falling over each other to get you to choose them. You can use this as leverage when it comes to the application process.

  • Schedule a visit. It is a good idea to arrange a tour of the campus you wish to attend. Location plays an important role for many students. If you enjoy a warm climate, then you may be interested in the University of California at Davis, which is located just outside of Sacramento.
