How to Position Embroidery Hoops
Embroidery hoops are necessary for many needlework projects, and come in handy even when they are not mandatory. The positioning of the hoop is important. If you do this correctly you'll be able to work on needlework or other embroidery projects much more easily.
For most types of needlework, an embroidery hoop is necessary. It keeps the cloth still and tight for both machine and hand stitching. Always begin by positioning your embroidery hoop over the area you plan on working on, especially when working with a large surface.
What You’ll Need
- Cloth
- Embroidery Hoop
- Loosen the metal screw around the outer ring. Twirl with your fingers until you can pull the rings apart. This works with a plastic or wooden embroidery hoop.
- Place the interior ring under the cloth being used for the project. The hoop should be positioned in a way where it sits directly under the portion that you plan on stitching. You'll need to readjust this as you work.
- Lower the external ring over the covered ring and the material. The cloth will be held tight under the hoop when it is in the right position. The hoop should be lifted up if the cloth is sagging or loose. Pull at the sides of the cloth inside of the hoop until they are tight. Some types of wool cloth and all silk should not be tightened. These types of material will warp when they have been tightened.
- Tighten up the screw on the top part of your embroidery hoop’s ring.
- Reposition your cloth and hoops when you are ready to begin embroidering a new section. Always ensure that the needlework design is perfectly centered inside of the hoop. This will allow you the best access to the area you will be stitching.
