How to Put Batteries in Digital Clocks
Digital clocks plug into the wall and use electricity to work. They don’t require batteries, however, if the power goes out, a digital clock will not work without a battery back-up. Putting batteries in a digital clock is necessary for the clock to continue to work without power, and it is very simple to do.
What You’ll Need
- Digital clock
- Phillips screwdriver
- Batteries
- Unplug your digital clock. For safety reasons, never work with electronic items without unplugging them first.
- Locate the battery cover on your digital clock. It will likely be on the bottom, but may be on the side.
- Remove the battery cover. Many battery covers are attached with screws, so a screwdriver may be necessary to take the cover off. Some covers just slip in and are held in place with a tab. Either way, take the cover off to expose the battery compartment.
- Remove any old batteries. If your clock already has batteries that are dead, take them out and set them aside to recycle. Never throw old batteries in the trash. Most cities have hazardous waste recycling which will accept old batteries.
- Insert the new batteries according to the diagram in the battery compartment. Digital clocks will likely take AA, AAA or 9Volt batteries.
- Put the battery cover back on. If the cover is held on with screws, tighten them with your screwdriver.
- Plug your digital clock back into the wall and set the correct time. Your clock now has a battery back up in case the power goes out or the plug accidentally comes out of the electrical outlet.
