How to Quiet Golf Carts

Golf cart manufacturers do their best to ensure golf carts are quiet when in operation. If you are the unfortunate owner of a noisy golf cart, check for various mechanical problems. After these solutions have been exhausted, try adding a silencer. The silencer draws power from the engine, but the trade-off is a quieter cart.

  1. Check all the mechanical possibilities. Look at the exhaust system and search for a hole in the muffler, a blown gasket or loose bolts. The primary cause of engine noise on golf carts is the result of exhaust exiting the vehicle and entering the atmosphere. The noise results from the rhythmic changes in pressure at the tail pipe. The muffler dampens and evens out the oscillations in pressure so the engine sounds are minimized. Repair any issues, which may include replacing the muffler or increasing the pipe length.

  2. Perform regular maintenance on the engine. This keeps the engine operating at peak efficiency, leading to a quieter engine.

  3. Look for a silencer for your golf cart. Many manufacturers do not make them, but some manufacturers produce a universal model. ATV dealers may have a universal silencer that can work on a golf cart. Before making a purchase, read the installation instructions. Some models can be easily installed, while others are more difficult, due to size or configuration. Install the silencer on the golf cart according to the manufacturer’s directions.

  4. Install a resonated exhaust tip. Resonated tips are lined with fiberglass or other sound dampening material and installed at the exhaust pipe. The tips absorb sound, helping reduce the noise level.
