How to Read Music Charts
One of the essential elements to studying music is learning to read a music chart. Music charts contain separate parts for each instrument included in a musical piece, as well as a conductor's score that includes all of the parts together. If you take the time to learn the basics, you will find that reading music charts is not complicated.
- Learn about how to read the different types of clefs used in music. Music charts use many different clefs, including the G clef, bass clef and treble clef. The type of clef that you will see depends on the genre of the music chart that you are reading, but it is essential that you are familiar with each clef. You can obtain a reference for each type of clef from a music store or an online resource.
- Study the full score. The full score is used by the conductor and has each instrument's part included on the score. Taking the time to study this score will give you insight as to how each instrument works together and the part they play in the musical piece as a whole. You will be able to see what instruments are responsible for the melody lines in the music and which are playing the bass and rhythm parts of the piece.
- Study each individual music sheet. Review each instrument's individual sheet music. You should be familiar with every instrument that is playing in any piece of music that you are studying. The music will look similar between many different instruments, as most instruments play in the same range and have similar notations. If you are familiar with the individual instrument, however, you should be able to have an understanding of the exact role that each instrument will play in the piece.
