- Look for the water supply valve for your water softener. Normally, it is near a wall or close to the floor. Turn the valve off to stop the water supply when you find it.
- Locate the electricity switch for the water softener and turn that off as well. Unplug the electrical cord from the wall, or turn off the power via the home circuit breaker. This depends on the type of system you have installed in the home.
- Remove all the water stored in the water softener. Look at the size of your system if it has a large capacity look on the bottom for a hose bibb and use a garden hose to empty the water. If you do not have a large system, look for a tap or valve, place your bucket under the attachment and empty into the bucket.
- Get your towel and place it under the water supply connection located close to your home plumbing to avoid water spillage. It is also a good idea to have a bucket on hand if you need to use it.
- Locate the inlet pipe located on the other side and disconnect. Make sure you have your towel handy to wipe up any spills.
- Disconnect the power supply source to the softener if you want to test the terminals. Take your screwdriver and open the side panel and using a voltmeter test the system. Using a voltmeter ensure that your electricity is completely turned off. Remove the screws on the terminal and take the electrical wire off with your needle nose pliers.
