How to Resurface Kitchen Sinks

If the surface on your kitchen sink is scratched or stained, you can resurface it to make it look like brand new again. Once you learn the correct way to resurface your sink, it is simple to do and won’t take very long. The first thing you have to do is prepare your old kitchen sink for the new one.

  1. Clean the kitchen sink with trisodium phosphate soap. Rinse the sink thoroughly and allow to air dry for at least two hours. Regular cleansers will leave residue that can interfere with the resurfacing process.

  2. Sand a non-metal sink until it feels course. This will allow the spray paint to adhere better to the sink. Sand the sink with a palm sander and medium grit sandpaper. You can purchase a palm sander at a home improvement store. Sand using a circular motion, and make sure you sand the entire sink. Clean the sanding dust using a damp rag when you are finished.

  3. Use making paper and tape to cover the countertops and faucet to protect it. Put tape over the metal sink drain.

  4. Spray acrylic spray primer on the kitchen sink. Hold the spray tip 8 inches from the sink. Allow the primer to dry for approximately two hours. If you have a metal sink, make sure you use metal etching spray prime instead of the acrylic spray primer.

  5. Finish the kitchen sink with epoxy spray paint. Hold the spray tip 8 inches from the sink as you spray it. Do not use the kitchen sink for 3 hours, including do not turn on the water.
