How to Ride a Horse Sidesaddle
Riding a horse sidesaddle is most commonly popular among women. Back in ancient Greece, this was the way all women would be seen riding their horse, as to appear more feminine. In the world today, most women ride in the same style that men do, although some choose to continue to ride sidesaddle. Over the past few decades, riding sidesaddle has grown in popularity.
Items Needed:
- Horse
- Sidesaddle
- Reins
- Proper apparel
- Ride a horse that is accustomed to sidesaddle riders. If your horse has never experienced this type of rider before, take the time to train them. When riding in the straddling style, both legs can be used to give commands. Sidesaddle riders are only able to give commands on one side, and must use a whip to cue the horse.
- Saddle your horse with the correct saddle. A sidesaddle has a second pommel placed sideways on the saddle and a safety stirrup in case of a fall. The second pommel provides cushioning and support for the thigh. Sidesaddles are available for English and Western riding.
- Adjust the horse's reins for sidesaddle riding. You may need to invest in longer reins if yours are not long enough.
- Keep your horse's head at the right angle by using a bit with curb pressure. Although, this is not always necessary.
- Wear proper apparel for riding sidesaddle. Depending on whether you are riding English or Western style, the apparel will vary. English riders should wear clothes that you may see on a fox hunt, while Western riders typically dress in western wear with a spur on their left leg.
