How to Save on Pet Health Care and Vet Bills

Caring for your pet properly is an important aspect of pet ownership. This includes keeping them healthy, having them checked by a vet regularly and providing them with proper medicines and treatments if the pet does become ill or have an accident.

  • Feed your pet high quality food. Food that contains mostly fillers and preservatives may cause pets with food allergies to become sick. For example, pets that are allergic to preservatives may develop an itch and rash. This can result in several vet trips and bills. Food that contains natural ingredients is healthier for pets and might lead to fewer health problems and fewer vet visits and bills.

  • Consider purchasing pet insurance. Pet insurance helps pay for certain medical procedures, treatments and medicines and helps bring down the cost of pet health care. Discuss the types of plans and premiums available and which vets, procedures, treatments and medicines are covered under the plans.

  • Brush your pet's teeth often. When a pet's teeth are not clean, the animal can develop a gum disease that will need veterinary care.

  • Take your pet to the veterinarian for regular checkups. When a pet's health is well maintained, it is less likely to develop serious heath problems or medical conditions, such as heart disease or periodontal disease which can cause them to lose teeth. Veterinarians can also catch problems before they worsen, making the treatments easier and less costly.

  • Avoid buying pets from puppy-mill type breeders. This type of breeder keeps its pets in unsafe and unclean living conditions. Purebred dogs are also more susceptible to congenital diseases and certain types of health problems.
