How to Secure Wireless Home Internet
Wireless home Internet provides the convenience of a wireless online connection that can be shared between devices. A wireless router needs to be installed that will transmit a wireless signal to all devices that require an Internet signal. For security reasons it is important to secure a home wireless connection.
- Purchase and install a wireless router either online or at a local electronics store. You can choose from a wireless N or wireless G router. A wireless N router offers further range than a wireless G router does.
- Install the wireless router on the main computer according to the manufacture's directions. There will be directions inside of the wireless router that shows you how to hook up the cables to the wireless router.
- Insert the installation CD that came with the wireless router. The installation CD should run automatically. If it does not run automatically, click on "My Computer" and then click on the drive where the installation CD is located to manually run the CD.
- Follow the onscreen installation instructions. When prompted, it is a good idea to change the default name of the connection to a personal name and password.
- Write down the name of the network connection as well as the password that you have set for the network. Anyone who wants to access the Internet connection will need to have this password.
- Ensure that the connection remains locked at all times to keep others from tapping into the Internet connection, which causes the strength of the signal to be weakened, lowering the speed of the Internet connection in the home.
