How to Set Up a Wireless Home Internet System

To operate wireless devices such as a laptop, iPad, iPod, iPhone or any other wireless device that requires an Internet connection, you must first set up a wireless Internet connection in the home. The process of setting up a wireless Internet connection is easy and will allow you to connect multiple wireless devices to the Internet.

  1. Purchase a wireless router from a local electronics store or online retailor. There are wireless N and wireless G routers available. Wireless G routers are less expensive; however, they do not offer as much range as a wireless N does.

  2. Turn off the computer and modem that provides Internet service to the main computer.

  3. Hook up the wireless router according to the manufacturer’s directions. Typically there is an Ethernet cable that connects from the wireless router to the modem as well as from the wireless router to the computer.

  4. Power up the computer once the wireless router has been physically installed.

  5. Inset the installation CD that came with the wireless router that you purchased. It should launch automatically after you have inserted it into the CD drive on the computer. If it does not open you can click on "My Computer" and then choose the drive where the CD is located.

  6. Wait for the installation CD to run. It will ask you if you would like to rename the name of the network. Rename the network to something that is easy for you to remember.

  7. Change the network password when prompted. Use a password that nobody else knows that contains a variety of uppercase and lowercase letters and at least one number.

  8. Finish the on-screen installation instructions until it says that the wireless router has been successfully installed.
