How to Set Up a Tent Trailer
A tent trailer is sometimes referred to as a pop-up trailer. It can be a great option for camping in the woods with your family and friends. Pop-up trailers give you a place to sit, eat and sleep and offer more shelter than a traditional tent. They are also very easy to set up.
- Decide on your location. If you are camping in a campground, chances are that you will have an assigned campsite upon arrival. When you are deciding where to place the camper, you should look for the most level spot on the campsite. Decide which way you want the camper to face and back your trailer into place.
- Level out your camper. Tent trailers are manufactured with a level to help you determine the correct placement of the camper. Place the leveling blocks under the tires of the camper and move them around until your camper is as level as possible. Chock the wheels to prevent the trailer from rolling or moving. Once you have determined a good position, lower the front support and unhook the trailer from your vehicle.
- Set up the roof. Older trailers will have a manual chuck that needs to be turned, which will cause the roof to slowly raise into position. Some new trailers feature an electronic roof, which requires the owner to simply push a button and watch the roof raise up. Finish setting up the trailer by pulling the beds out from either side of the roof. Be sure to move slowly and avoid snagging the mesh or fabric, which might cause a rip.
- Set up the canopy. If your camper has a front canopy, you should assemble it after the roof has been raised. Simply attach the canopy supports and lower them as appropriate.
- Set up your internal canopy supports. Most tent trailers feature a few different internal supports. Their exact location will vary by manufacturer. Take the time to set these supports up properly, which will help ensure that your tent trailer is assembled safely.
