How to Tour With a Motorcycle Tent Trailer

Previously, touring on your motorcycle meant sleeping in cheap motels or camping out on the hard ground. If you were able to pack your clothing and toiletries into your bike, you were lucky. 2. Determine your budget. Most trailers range from $2,000 to $4,000. Determine how much you can afford to spend on your new trailer and how you will pay for it. If you need to secure financing, obtain loan pre-approval from your bank.

  3. Research your options. There are many different models of motorcycle tent trailers on the market. Their prices vary greatly based on the features and options that you choose. Visit a licensed retailer to view the trailers in person. Do some research online to find out what types of trailers are available and see what features they offer.

  4. Test drive the trailer that you are interested in. Ensure that you can properly steer, accelerate and break with the trailer attached. Your bike should function well with the added weight of the trailer. If it does not, you might need to look for a lighter-weight options.

  5. Have a custom trailer hitch installed. Most manufacturers sell custom hitches for their tent trailers. Find a hitch that fits your trailer model and have it installed on your bike.

  6. Make your reservations and pack your gear. Choose a campground and set up reservations for your stay. Pack your gear into the trailer. Before you head out, check your tire pressure, as you might need to adjust it with the additional weight of the trailer. Ensure that all lights and signals on both your bike and trailer are functioning properly. Upon arrival at your campsite, set up your new tent trailer according to the manufacturer's instructions.
