How to Sew Draperies

Sewing draperies does not require many tools. All that is needed is a tape measure, and sewing machine. By sewing them yourself you can easily save hundreds of dollars, than if you had them custom made. You will need to know how to take measurements, and have some sewing skill.

Taking Measurements

  1. You will need to purchase curtain rods, rings or clips from your local craft or hardware store.

  2. Install the curtain rods, as you will need these to accurately measure out the fabric.

  3. When measuring, do not start from the top, but from the very bottom of the curtain rod until you reach the floor. After it is measured, you will need to take .25 from the number you obtained.

  4. Measure the width of the curtain rods, as this will be essential in cutting draperies that will fit on the rods.

Purchase Fabric

  1. You will need to take the above measurements to your local fabric store. If unsure on how much fabric to measure inform an employee of how many windows you will be decorating, and the measurements.

Cutting the Fabric

  1. After obtaining the fabric, cut it until it is the desired length of your calculations. Add at least 8 inches to the hem (located at the bottom) and 12 to 14 inches to the top of the fabric.

  2. Regarding the lining you will need to cut the width to be 2 inches smaller than the drapery to leave room.

  3. Cut the lining length so that it matches the length of the finished piece. You will need to add 3 inches to the hem, and another 5 inches to the header. This is added to ensure that the finished pieces match.

  4. Save any scraps, as they can be used for small pillows or decoration.

Sewing

  1. Fold the drapery bottom up at 3 to 5 inches, then fold another 3 to 5 inches, and press it. Use a needle and thread to create a straight stitch.

  2. Fold the bottom lining another inch, and press it. Once pressed, fold up 2 more inches.

  3. Align one of the drapery's side edges, and pin the layers together. You may then sew in a stitch that is .4-inches. Repeat this for the other side.

  4. Fold the sides, and sew into a straight stitch. Tuck in the bottom edges, and stitch the corners.

  5. Pin the top edge so that it is in place. Stitch the top corner, and clip on the rings. Make sure to clip the rings along the line that is stitched.
