How to Sharpen Push Mower Blades

If your lawn mower does not cut the grass as good as it used to it is more than likely in need of having the blade sharpened. Some people take their mowers to a professional to get the blades sharpened, but it is something that you can easily do yourself.

  1. Remove the battery from the lawn mower if it is battery operated. If not, make sure the power source is completely disconnected before attempting to work on the mower. This should be done to prevent the engine from accidentally starting, which could cause serious injury.

  2. Turn the lawn mower over and use a wrench to remove the bolt holding the blade in place.

  3. Carefully remove the blade from the mower.

  4. Pay close attention to how you are taking the blades off if there is more than one because you will need to replace them in the same way. You may want to mark them with a marker.

  5. Place a vice on the blade so you can hold it steady while you are sharpening it.

  6. Put on a pair of heavy-duty gloves to protect your hands during the grinding process.

  7. Turn on the grinder and hold the blade in your hand and run the edge of the blade against the grinder.

  8. Slowly run the blade of the mower up and down on the grinder. Do not grind the blade too much because you do not want to weaken it and cause it to break when it comes in contact with any hard objects such as branches or rocks.

  9. Replace the sharpened blades back on the mower and secure with the bolts.
