How to Sharpen a Lawn Tractor Blades
The blade is the most important component of a lawn tractor because without it the tractor would be useless. The blade should be sharpened on a regular basis to ensure that it will cut properly. This is something that you can quickly and easily do yourself, but precautions should be taken to ensure your safety.
How to Sharpen a Lawn Tractor Blade
- Remove the blade completely off the tractor. Be sure to wear gloves to prevent the blade from cutting your hands.
- Plug in the bench grinder and turn the unit "on".
- Hold the blade in your hand and run it back and forth across the grinder and continue until you get the edge you desire. It is very important that you do not force the blade down onto the grinder because it could damage the blade. Keep a bucket of water sitting on the side to dip the blade in if it becomes too hot while sharpening.
- Grind both edges of the tractor blade evenly, which basically means to remove the same amount of metal from both ends of the blade.
- Use a blade balancer to make sure the blade is straight. If the blade is not balanced it could cause damage to the tractor. This can be purchased at most stores that sell lawn tractor parts.
- Use a metal file to remove any jagged edges from the blade.
- Replace the blade on the tractor.
