How to Snake a Drain Pipe
One popular way to unclog a drain is to use a plumber’s snake. The snake, or auger, is designed with a long cable and auger on one end and a manual crank on the other. The snake is lowered into the sink or drain to unclog it. There are two types of plumber’s snakes; one is called the closet auger, which is smaller than the more commonly used drain augur. When the snake is used right it works perfect to clear clogs.
Items needed:
- Plumbers snake
- Old cloth
- Water
- Trash can
Instructions:
- Clear the drain of any visible signs of debris or other materials that may be causing the clog. Take the plumber’s snake and lower it into the drain. Turn the auger's handle using a clockwise motion. You may have to change the position of the grip just a few inches from the opening. Do this until the snake fits just right.
- Slowly push the snake down the drain until the auger reaches the clog or blocked area. At this point continue to turn the crank end of the snake and push it back and forth. You should begin to feel the clogged area break free of the debris. Continue to do this until you are satisfied your drain is completely clear.
- Pull the snake up and make sure you take out the debris that comes up with it. Push the snake back down into the drain to make sure you do not feel any more clogs or blockage.
- Clean the plumber’s snake with an old cloth or rag. Dispose of any debris or other materials that is on the snake or left in the sink.
- Run warm water down your drain to make sure it drains properly. The process using the snake can be repeated until you are completely satisfied with the results.
