How to Start a Veterinary Practice

As a successful veterinarian with a well-established customer base you should take the next step by starting your own practice. This business venture allows you more freedom and control of your work environment. Subsequently it also makes you a potentially successful business owner.

  1. Work closely with a financial planner if you haven't already to determine where financial you could take risks. Determine the amount of upfront capital you could invest into your own practice. Establish a budget for when you do start this veterinary practice.

  2. Prequalify for a business loan through a bank or finance company for the purchase of an existing practice. Ensure that your credit rating is high when you file this application, as your credit rating will affect the loan amount for which you qualify.

  3. Work closely with a real estate agent to select the right veterinary practice for you. It is better to purchase an existing veterinary practice instead of starting from scratch as there is usually existing equipment included in the purchase. Work with your real estate agent to complete the purchase of this existing veterinary practice.

  4. Launch a marketing campaign. Use the budget you devised with your financial planner in step 1 to determine how much capital is available for marketing your new veterinary practice. Once this amount is determined hire a marketing consultant to aid you in the creation and launch of this marketing campaign.

  5. Conduct an open house to introduce the existing neighborhood to your new veterinary practice. Serve refreshments and plan several activities for area pets and owners to enjoy together.
