How to Trace a Lost Laptop Computer

Every year, thousands of laptops can be lost. It can take a blink of an eye before an unintended laptop can be gone. If your laptop gets lost, there are a few key tips you can do to trace it and possibly have it returned back to you.

  • Label your laptop on the outside with some information about yourself. This could be your name, email address and phone number. Never put your address in case it may fall into the wrong hands. If someone comes across it and wants to return it, they have the information to go by.

  • Keep in a safe place the information of the serial number, brand of your laptop, model and any unique markings and such to confirm that it is your laptop. The serial number can be located easily either by a sticker on the bottom of your laptop, inside of the battery compartment or on the receipt from when you purchased the laptop.

  • Use tracking software that can be installed on your laptop. If your laptop becomes lost, the tracking software enables the police to see who is using the laptop at the time and where the laptop is located.

  • Call the police right away when you discover your laptop is missing. Tell them the information about your laptop that you had written down so they can let you know when they have recovered it.

  • Call the manufacturer of the laptop and report that it was lost. Give them the serial number of the laptop so that they can give you further information on what needs to be done.
