How to Train a Horse for Penning

Training a horse for penning is not an easy task, and it will take you time and a lot of patience. You will need experience working with horses before you can learn how to train a horse for penning. With the right experience, it can be achieved over time.

Supplies

  • Horses

  • Cows

  • Arena

  • Penning panels

  1. Start with a horse that is already broken in. If you are not able to put a saddle on this horse and ride him, he is not ready to be trained for penning cattle.

  2. Make sure your horse is used to being around cows. Walk her up to a cow and let her sniff it and look at it. Make sure the horse is not scared of the cows before you start training it to pen them.

  3. Put cows in an arena, and then ride your horse into the arena with the cattle. Make sure you praise your horse constantly as you go through this process. Keep her around the cattle so she can get use to them. Walk her through the middle of the cows, praising her as you go.

  4. Start walking a little faster and then work up to a job as you ride the horse into a group of cows. Keep working with her at different speeds around the cows until she is comfortable.

  5. Set up a pen in the arena and start using your horse to move the cattle into it.  Keep practicing with the horse until she understands what you are doing with the cattle.
