How to Train a Horse for Roping

If you have a new horse that you need to train for roping, it can be a challenge but fun. With a lot of hard work and patience you can teach your horse to rope. People use roping in the rodeo, as well as on ranches. You can train a horse for roping by following a few guidelines first.

Supplies

  • Rope

  • Rope dummy

  1. Make sure the horse you want to train for roping knows the basics before you start. He should already know how to walk, pick up his leads and canter on a loose rein. He should also know how to back up. If your horse knows all of this, he is ready to train for roping.

  2. Carry the rope around with you as you are around the horse. Let him see the rope and sniff at it. Swing the rope around you while you are around the horse. Get on the horse and swing the rope around while he his walking, trotting or cantering around.

  3. Purchase a rope dummy to be used in the training. A rope dummy is the head of a calf that you can attach to a bale of hay. Saddle up your horse and mount him. Make sure you have your rope ready. Walk towards the dummy and swing the rope to catch it. Once you do, have your horse back up slowly. Do this repeatedly until he is use to it.

  4. Dismount your horse when he has backed up enough. Keep watching the horse, as you start moving towards the calf with your rope. Make sure your horse stays in one place and waits for you. If he starts moving, immediately move him back in place.  Keep going over these steps until the horse is comfortable with the dummy. You can then try to rope a real calf.
