How to Troubleshoot a Shallow Well Pump

A shallow well pump can be a simple thing to correct, or it can be a very complex problem. There are some simple things that can be checked before you have to spend the money on a professional. These things can save you time, money and embarrassment.

  1. Verify the power is on. Most modern wells require a power supply. Make sure the electricity is on for the well. You should also make sure there breaker is powered on, and that is has not tripped.

  2. Check the well pump. Wells require a pump to keep the water supply primed. A crack in this pump can cause the well to lose its prime. Another issue with the well pump can be a broken seal on the suction pipe. Check the pressure gauge on the water supply without any water until turned on. If there is a loss in pressure then the seal should be replaced or repaired.

  3. Test the rubber bladder tank. This component is found within the pressure tank reservoir, and it assists the unit to maintain a high water pressure. This is tested with an air pressure gauge. It should be somewhere between 35 to 45 PSI. This can be refilled if it is low, but if there is a hole it will need to be fixed or replaced.

  4. Call a professional. When all else fails you should call in professional assistance. Wells can be complex for the untrained, so if the common troubleshooting methods do not correct your problem then you need to call someone trained in the field.
