How to Tweak Dial-Up Internet Speed

If you use dial-up Internet you know how slow it can be. Fortunately, there are some tweaks you can make to make it a little faster. Dial-up Internet is going to be slow no matter what you do, but you can help it go a little faster. You can learn how to tweak dial-up Internet speed in a few short steps.

  1. Click the “Start” button, and then click “Control Panel.” The Control Panel window opens. Click “System and Security,” click “System,” and then click “Device Manager” to open the Device Manager window. Open the Ports (COM & LPT) and click the port your modem is on one time to select it. Click “Properties” at the bottom of the screen. Click “Port Settings” and write down all of the settings that are currently there. This is so if something does not work, you will be able to change it back to what it was.

  2. Change the Bits Per Second setting to 115200. Normally, this is set to 9600 bps as the default. Raising the bps can help speed up your modem.

  3. Change the Flow Control at the bottom to Hardware. It is normally set to Xon/Xoff as the default. Setting it to Hardware will speed up the modem.

  4. Click the “Advanced” button. Slide the Receiver Buffer bar all the way to the right. This will help increase the performance on your computer. Click “OK” to save the changes.

  5. Click “Modem” from the Control Panel. Select your modem and then click “Properties.” Set the Maximum Speed to 115200. Make sure the “Only connect at this speed” check box is not checked.

  6. Click the “Connection” tab. Set the Data bits to 8, Parity to none, and Stop bits to 1. Click “Port Settings” and change the Receive Buffer slider all the way to High (right). Click “OK” to save the changes.
