How to Use Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for Self Defense

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a formidable martial art that incorporates grappling and ground fighting in order to disable and defeat opponents. It is an excellent way to defend yourself against attackers and can save your life in many situations. However, Jiu Jitsu can and should be used only for self-defense purposes because the moves you utilize can cause severe and even permanent damage.

  1. Speak with your attacker first if at all possible. Warn the attacker that you have extensive knowledge and training in Jiu Jitsu and that you will not hesitate to use it if you are attacked. Stay calm and be confident in yourself and your opponent will be much more wary to pursue you any further. Even if you feel afraid, you can mask this fear by keeping a straight face and staring into your opponent’s eyes.

  2. Keep your guard up and be prepared during the entire situation. By starting off in a defensive stance, your attacker will not have the advantage of catching you off guard and will be much less likely to initiate a fight. Keep your fists up and protect your face and ribcage while you are talking to the attacker.

  3. Defend yourself at all times. Do not let your guard down until you are absolutely certain that the person is no longer a threat to your safety. Use warning techniques in order to ward off attackers.

  4. Use a quick blow to the face followed up by a throw and you will scare off most people. The goal is not to harm the person you are fighting, but instead to defend yourself. By using quick blows to disorient the person rather than using damaging moves, you will be able to defeat most attackers without really having to fight them.

  5. Use full force and do everything in your power to defeat the person if all other methods fail. Disable the person's limbs or put them in a choke hold to incapacitate them. If the person is unable to be reasoned with, then you should use force until they surrender or are no longer a threat.
