How to Use Hickory Chips With a Gas Grill
If you are grilling out meat and want a smoky flavor, you can learn how to use hickory chips with a gas grill. Some gas grills have a place where you can put the chips, such as a small drawer that pulls out. If your grill does not, there are other ways you can use the hickory chips to obtain the same taste.
Supplies:
- Aluminum foil
- Sharp object
- Hickory chips
- Cup or bowl
- Place approximately 2 cups of hickory chips in water in a cup or bowl, and soak them for approximately 30 minutes.
- Remove the hickory chips from the water and wrap completely in aluminum foil. Use a fork or knife to poke six holes on the top of the aluminum foil.
- Put the foil of hickory chips over the burner on the gas grill, beneath the grate. Turn the control knob on the gas grill to the “High” setting and wait until you see smoke coming from the hickory chips wrapped in foil. When you see the smoke, reduce the heat on the grill and continue cooking your meat. The smoke from the hickory chips will give your meat a smoky flavor.
- Place the hickory chips in the small pull out drawer on the gas grill if there is one. Some grills have a built in drawer to be used for hickory chips when grilling food. If so, place the soaked hickory chips in the drawer and close it. Don’t forget to remove the chips from the drawer when you are finished grilling.
- Remove the hickory chips wrapped in aluminum foil from the grill when you are finished grilling and throw them away.
