How to Use Lava Rocks in an Electric Barbecue Grill

Lava rocks are igneous rock from volcanic areas that are generally jagged in shape. Lava rocks are considered helpful because of their ability to both adsorb and retain heat, making them an ideal addition to electric grills and propane cooking grills.

  1. Put a steel grate over the top of the heating element in your electric grill.

  2. Place new lava rocks a single layer deep over the steel grate on top of the heating element. Ensure that you don’t stack the rocks on top of each other as lava rocks should be close enough that the edges are touching.

  3. Put the cooking grill on the top of the lava rocks. Make the sure the cooking surface is at least 3-inches above the lava rocks.

  4. Plug in the electric grill and adjust the control knob to your desired temperature, then close the cover for the grill.

  5. Allow the grill to preheat for around 10 minutes.

  6. Use a wire brush to scrape the cooking grill in order to remove any food particles and carbon from the previous timed you used the grill.

  7. Grill your food according to your recipe instructions.

  8. Once your food is cooked, leave the grill turned on for at least five minutes after you remove the food. This will allow the lava rocks to burn off any grease.

  9. Turn the rocks over when the grill is no longer in use. Completing this step will prolong the life of the lava rocks by helping them to evenly wear on each side.

  10. Replace the lava rocks once they begin to show signs of damage such as falling apart of having a bad smell.
