How to Use a Pipe Threader

Even though it is simple to walk into a plumbing or hardware store and purchase pre-threaded pipes of any length, this does not mean that it will be an exact fit. You may need to make a cut somewhere in the piping to fit the new pipe in. This is where knowing how to use a manual pipe threader comes in handy and learning to use this tool is fairly simple.

You will need:

  • Manual pipe threader

  • Pipe die head

  • Pipe reamer

  • Pipe cutter

  • Pipe vise

  • Thread cutting oil

  1. Use a pipe vise to secure the pipe and cut it with a pipe cutter. Make sure that the end of the pipe is square.

  2. Remove any burrs from the cut you made by inserting a pipe reamer into the end of the pipe and then turning it.

  3. Choose the pipe die head based in the material and size of the pipe. Also make sure it is the right pitch for the thread you will be cutting. Insert the die head into the threader ratchet.

  4. Slide the pipe guide, which is on the rear end of the threader, over top of the pipe. Engage the ratchet's riding paw and apply pressure to the front of the die head. Do this while moving the threader's handle down. This will begin the process of threading the pipe.

  5. Continue ratcheting the die head until it is flush with the end of the pipe. Use the handle to unscrew and remove the pipe from the threader.

Tips for using a manual pipe threader

  • When you are manually threading the pipe, make sure that your weight is above the pipe. Use all of your weight, not just the weight of your arms.

  • Be sure to use a high quality thread cutting oil. Thread cutting oil that is poor quality will shorten the life of your tools and create leaky joints.

  • You are more likely to slip and injure yourself if you use a "cheater" pipe on the handle.
