How to Write Christian Music Lyrics

Writing lyrics for a Christian song isn't very different from writing lyrics for a regular song. The main difference is the type of issues that are written about. Contrary to what many think when they hear “Christian music,” the words don't have to be pertaining to God, Jesus, or the Bible as long as they have a positive message.

  1. Decide what you want your song to be about. The possibilities are virtually limitless. When writing Christian lyrics though, the words should either be about something positive, or give a lesson about something evil.

  2. Determine what genre you want your song to be. This could be country, rock, classic, folk or even rap. Knowing which genre your song will be written for will help you come up with a melody.

  3. Get a melody in your head. This is just a rhythm or beat that you can put words to. Once you feel like you have a good rhythm come up with words that fit it well.

  4. Write your fist verse. Use the melody you have in your head as well as the topic your writing about to determine how you want the verse to go. It's common for the words to rhyme, but it's by no means necessary as long as it still sounds right.

  5. Come up with a good chorus. This is the main idea of your song and is normally repeated at least one more time throughout your song. The melody will usually change to something a little more upbeat from the verses to the chorus, but this also in not necessary.

  6. Decide if you want a bridge. Many songs have what is called a bridge. The bridge is normally either another small verse, or a instrumental change. The bridge most commonly comes near the end of the song before the last chorus is sung.
