Shower Head Cleaning Tips

If you have hard water, mineral deposits can quickly build-up on your showerhead. Build-up can clog your showerhead and essentially not let it perform like it did when it was new. When this happens your water pressure is affected and the water will come out in spurts or in a low flow. However, there are some quick tips you can use to keep your showerhead working like new.

Use vinegar as a natural cleaner

To remove the lime and mineral build-up on your showerhead, you can use vinegar as a cleaning agent. If you can remove your showerhead, simply submerge it in vinegar for a few hours. However, if it is not possible to remove the showerhead then simply fill a plastic bag with warm vinegar and place it on the showerhead by wrapping the top of the bag to the showerhead with rubber bands.

Clean and replace filter screens

Some showerheads may have a filter screen, which is in the part of the showerhead that connects to your plumbing pipe that the head is attached to. You will have to remove the showerhead from the pipe to clean the filter. If the filter seem as though it is badly clogged, you can soak it in vinegar to remove the build-up. However, if this does not work, it means the filter will need replaced.

Change out the showerhead

Over time lime and minerals can break down the nozzle of the showerhead and eventually cause the showerhead to completely stop functioning. Additionally, bacteria can build-up in the showerhead and eventually cause respiratory infections. To reduce the chance of bacteria build-up, it is suggested to change out your showerhead every six months.
