Snow Plowing and Removal Equipment
If you live in a colder climate, you have probably seen your fair share of snow. While it is certainly a beautiful sight, all of that snow on sidewalks and roadways can make travel slow and dangerous. Using the proper snow plowing and removal equipment can make the job of clearing these areas easier.
Removing Snow from Roadways
In most places that receive large amounts of snow during the winter, the cities maintain the responsibility for clearing snow from roadways. This is done with specialized equipment. The first step is usually to salt the roads. A gritter or sand truck is dispatched to spread salt over the roads. The salt melts the ice to allow better traction for other vehicles. Once the snow has stopped falling, snowplows and graders are sent out to push the snow to the side of the road. The final step in areas that get continuous snowfall is to remove the snow that accumulates on the side of the road. Large snow blowers collect the snow from the side of the road and load it into dump trucks to be hauled away.
Clearing Driveways and Sidewalks
While the city is responsible for keeping roadways clear, removing snow from driveways and sidewalks is usually the responsibility of the home or business owner. A snow shovel is the most common tool for removing snow from driveways and sidewalks. For people who are not able to use a snow shovel, snow blowers or augers may be a better option. A snow blower works much like a leaf blower to blow the snow away. A snow auger is more like a lawn mower. You roll over the snow and blow it away. It some areas, homeowners are required by law to keep sidewalks clear and can be ticketed for failure to do so. The proper equipment will make this task less of a hassle.
