Snow Removal Techniques

There's more than one way to get rid of snow. The time-honored tradition of shoveling is the way most are familiar, but it might not be suitable for people with back problems. Other methods of removing snow require less intense labor.

Shoveling Snow

Shoveling snow requires only a snow shovel, but it is a labor-intensive task. Make sure you're ready for it by stretching beforehand and by not being overdressed. Although it will be cold outside, you're going to work up a sweat. Layer your clothing so it can be removed as your body heats up. Also, bring a water bottle with you to keep hydrated.

Move the snow as short a distance as possible when shoveling. Decide where you're going to dump the snow, and make sure you don’t have to move the snow more than once. Maintain proper posture while snow shoveling by keeping your back straight while bending the knees to lift and throw the snow. Finish the movement using your shoulder muscles. Also, make sure to take rests.

Using Salt and Snowblowers

Salt or a similar de-icer will be necessary even if you are shoveling snow because you will need to spread it on the shoveled area to get rid of the ice. Ice-melt products like salt help keep your driveway and porches safe from slippery ice. If you want something easier than shoveling snow, consider buying a snowblower. People who live in regions with heavy snowfall will want a two-stage gas snowblower. A single-stage gas or electric snowblower should be adequate for areas with lighter snowfall.
